Our Journey
RedHat Summer Camp
RedHat Summer Camp
Plantiful was born during Red Hat Summer Camp 2022, where a series of workshops guided us toward the final project. Within a few hours we clarified the idea, the pitch, and the deck. The competition was fierce, but we still managed to win.
- Within 48 hours we shaped Plantiful's vision and, with mentor support, built the MVP.
- Presented our idea and won Best Project at Red Hat Summer Camp.
Kyndryl Challenge
Kyndryl Challenge
Winning Red Hat motivated us to keep going, so we entered the Kyndryl Challenge and went through another round of hands-on workshops. We doubled down on understanding our audience, completed the project concept, and added even more ideas. The Kyndryl judges loved it, we shared first place with another team, and we were offered a year-long internship to start building the app.
- Presented our vision to the jury.
- Won the challenge and earned an internship to keep building Plantiful.
Kyndryl Internship
Kyndryl Internship
During the year-long Kyndryl internship we slowly turned the prototype into reality. We brought in a dedicated designer, Honza Truneček, who played a key role in shaping the visual identity. We designed the final look and features of the app, worked as a team, prepared for more competitions, kept developing the product, and consulted everything with our project manager from Kyndryl.
- Designed the final look and feature set of the app.
- Worked as a team, prepared for more competitions, and continued building the product.
JA Expo
JA Expo
We had already validated the technical side of the app and were actively building it. At the last minute we received an invitation to JA EXPO, and within a month we had to prepare the annual report, business model, and monetisation plan. In Prague's Harfa Gallery we presented Plantiful to thousands of visitors and collected feedback from them as well as from the category judges.
We won Best Business Pitch and finished second in the STEM category.
- Collected feedback from more than 2,000 visitors during live demos.
- Made the TOP 10 finals by winning Best Business Pitch.
FEKT EEICT
FEKT EEICT
Another stop on the journey was the high-school track of the VUT FEKT EEICT conference. It became our biggest challenge yet—the field was stacked with great teams. We had to write a technical paper, document the algorithms, explain how we implemented the Plant.id API, and describe the entire technology stack behind the app.
A jury of academics and industry mentors awarded us third place, and their feedback helped us polish the last bugs before release.
- Won 3rd place in the EEICT 2024 high-school track.
- Wrote a technical whitepaper outlining the app's architecture.

Open-source Release
Open-source Release
We spent months debating what comes next. Without outside investment we couldn't compete with international teams that can burn millions before the first revenue, so we decided to give everything back to the community—completely free. Anyone can use our app as a template, learn from our mistakes, and keep shaping the vision.
- Open-sourced the entire Plantiful codebase and design system.
- Documented the full technology stack and implementation.
A Word From Our Team

Plantiful started as a high-school experiment that blossomed into something much bigger. None of us had built a mobile app before and, honestly, we barely knew anything about plants. We learned everything on the fly and we're proud of what we created. Every good story ends eventually, so we closed this chapter by open-sourcing the product, documentation, and design system—letting anyone continue the journey, learn from our mistakes, or keep building on the vision.
You still won't find Plantiful in the App Store or on Google Play. Thanks to the open-source code you can try it today, or send us a note for a ready-made demo.
Acknowledgement
We're immensely grateful to the mentors from RedHat Summer Camp, Kačka and Irena from Kyndryl, Tomáš Caha and Lenka Hrušková from Purkynka High School in Brno, Libor Hoření from JIC, the team at Kindwise, the JA Czech jury, and everyone else who gave us space to experiment, patiently shared their experience, and believed in our vision.
Thank you for helping Plantiful bloom.
